This morning we hosted a cross country meet here in Nightmute. I chose to work at the high school turnaround during the meet. (That is the midpoint of the highschool race. They run to me, then turnaround and head back to the beginning.) It was pretty cold, but I got a lovely view of the village and airport! :)
Here is a view of the airport. All the cross country kids are getting lined up for the race to start.
I had the best view of the race. I watched them run all the way from the airport to the middle school. You can see them running along the airport road heading into town.
Here is my view of the village from my spot on the hill. The high school runners ran past the red school and up the hill. They ran all the way to me, then all the way back to the air port. It was about 3 1/2 miles and it took them about 30 minutes to run. I was tired just watching them.
I took a panoramic of the airport road. You can see the airport all the way to the village.
Here is my spot as the high school turnaround. The runners had to run to the orange cone and run back up the hill. I could hear the natural spring that is further up the hill. Maybe soon, I'll walk up to find it. :)
Oh, I forgot to mentioned it started to snow last night.... The top of the hill has a light dusting of snow. I have heard that it is going to be a rough winter with a lot of snow. Some of the kids told me that since the grass is really tall and there is a lot of it, there will be a lot of snow. The Earth is "warming" itself by growing tall grass before a big snow.
Our middle schoolers did really well in the meet overall. We had four students competing. Two girls and two boys. We had no high school runners. We had 5th place in the middle school boys race, and 1st place in the middle school girls. Way to go Nightmute Nighthawks! :)
