Native Youth Olympics (NYO)
Every Wednesday we practice for the Native Youth Olympics. We practice a variety of events. Middle school students help the younger students learn each of the events. We practice four events.
The first event we practice is the stick pull. This event represents pulling a seal into your boat. Two students sit with their feet together and they both grab onto the stick. They then pull at the same time. Whoever has the stick at the end, wins.
The next event was the One-foot high kick. Students kick a ball hanging from the ceiling. They kick with one foot and land on one foot. Some of my girls are really good at this event. The older kids can kick higher than I am tall.
The next event was the wrist carry. Two middle school kids carry a younger student using a long stick. They have to hold their body above the ground. They try to go the farthest while still holding on to the stick. Two of my girls went around the gym twice.
The last event is the Alaskan High Kick. Students have to kick the ball hanging from the ceiling. They have to keep holding onto one foot, while kicking the other.
