Gillette, WY: Devil's Tower
This morning we headed to Devil's Tower (the first national monument).
We hiked the 1.3 miles around the tower.
There are quite a few legends of how the tower was formed. One legend is of seven little girls who were being chased by bears. The girls prayed for the rock to save them from the bears. The rock started to push upward and the bears scratched at the sides of the rock.
Many people come to Devil's Tower to climb to the top. We were quite amazed at the number of climbers out today.
I even tried to climb the tower. I didn't make it very far!

Black Hills, SD: Crazy Horse Memorial
The Crazy Horse is a work in progress. When it is finished, it will be the largest mountain sculpture in the world. Mt. Rushmore is the size of Crazy Horse's face. The memorial's mission is to honor the culture, tradition, and living heritage of North American Indians. You can see the face of Lakota leader Crazy Horse. They are currently working on the horse's face. You can see the outline of the horse in white on the side of the mountain.
This is what the finished memorial will look like. This is 1/30th of the actual size.
