Carving Pumpkins

In preparation for Halloween, the school provided every classroom with two pumpkins to carve.  My kids chose a round pumpkin, and a tall pumpkin.

Before we carved the pumpkins, we had to learn about them.  We learned about the lifecycle of a pumpkin and we described the pumpkins with our five senses.

I made a bulletin board in the hallway with everything we learned about pumpkins.

We worked in two groups to clean out the pumpkin goo.  Everyone was able to help scoop out the goop.  We separated the seeds from the goop to count.  The girls worked on the small round pumpkin and the boys worked on the tall pumpkin.

After separating the seeds, we counted the seeds. Everyone guessed how many seeds we have all together.  We made groups of ten on large pieces of paper. Then we made groups of a hundred.  We had 685 seeds.

I roasted the pumpkin seeds and everyone tried them.  They were quite delicious.

We planned out the faces for our pumpkins.  We voted on what kinds of eyes, nose, mouth, and eyebrows the faces should have.

We took turns drawing the faces on the pumpkins, so everyone had a chance to draw something.

Stella and I then cut out the faces for the pumpkins.  All the kids loved eating the extra pumpkin.  I don't think we threw away any pumpkin because the kids ate all of it.

We ended up with an angry vampire and....

a Happy Face.

The kiddos were super excited to see them lit up with a candle on Halloween. :)
