March is the season of Dance Festivals. We hosted a dance festival a couple of weeks ago, during spring break. There were people visiting from other villages. Some people traveled by snow machine or 4 wheeler, and some traveled by plane. There were many people paced into our teeny tiny gym.
I believe the dancers in the video are from Newtok, another village on Nelson Island.
Dancers are mostly women and the drummers are men. A drum is called a cauyaq. The dancers are wearing traditional Qaspeqs (the long dress-like shirts). They are using dance fans made out of musk ox hair. Their head pieces are made out of fur and decorated with beads.
